Of Earth and Elsewhere
In this ongoing project (2011–present), I explore the relationship between humans and the landscapes that surround them. Themes such as escapism and the sublime lie at the core of my work.
Drawn by remote and vast landscapes, they also urge me to manipulate them. By putting a person or object into these settings, I aim to create a sense of estrangement. I want to play with the way we experience nature in everyday life, like during a walk in the forest. In doing so, I reveal how familiar environments can shift into spaces of mystery and dream.
My work strives to evoke the landscape’s raw presence by introducing an unexpected element, a figure or object, that sparks a dreamlike tension. I try to find a contrast as well as an agreement between the objects and the landscape. At times, I lean into playfulness; at others, I transform the human figure into a kind of divine presence, surrounded by floating objects.
Human beings dominate this planet, yet we remain small within the vastness of the natural world. This tension between significance and insignificance is a driving force in my work.
